Honda begins building EV production infrastructure

Honda has long planned to build its EV hub in Ohio, and it looks like that plan is finally taking shape. In 2022, Honda announced that it would invest almost $700 million in three factories that will produce electric vehicles. More details are now available after this announcement, and one of the major changes is Accord production now moving to Indiana.

What Has Changed?

Honda currently produces the Accord in its Ohio factory. It will now consolidate two production lines at this factory. This will allow it to build the infrastructure it needs for EV production. Honda is expected to begin this transformation in January 2024. It will transfer its Accord production to Indiana in 2025 and will maintain its production volume at the new location.

Honda’s Anna Engine Plant (AEP) will also see changes. All engine production at this plant will move to Alabama’s auto plant by August of this year. This will free up space at AEP to produce better cases to be used in EVs. Honda will also dedicate one assembly line in Georgia to produce e-axle. This will be installed, owned, and operated by a Honda supplier.

What Will The EV Hub Comprise?

Honda will create an EV hub at its Marysville plant, East Liberty plant and AEP. Honda’s battery production facility will be at the core of this hub. Honda has also begun a venture with LG Energy Solution to build the Ohio factory. This is expected to be completed by 2024. Honda also announced that it will invest over $40 billion throughout this decade to increase EV and hybrid sales. It hopes that almost 40% of its sales by 2030 will comprise EVs.
