Isuzu and Honda unite forces to achieve carbon neutrality of heavy-duty trucks by 2027

In a significant stride towards a sustainable future, Isuzu Motors Limited and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have forged a partnership to achieve carbon neutrality for heavy-duty trucks by 2027. The collaboration brings together their collective research and development (R&D) efforts, focusing on harnessing the power of fuel cell technology and hydrogen fuel for carbon emission-free operations.

Fuel cell technology

Fuel cell technology leverages hydrogen as a clean energy source, and its application in heavy-duty trucks aligns with the demand for larger load capacity, long-distance driving, and quick refuelling capabilities. This technology's zero CO2 emissions feature significantly contributes to the broader objective of achieving carbon neutrality.

Since signing a joint research agreement in January 2020, the two companies have dedicated their efforts to establishing fundamental technologies. This includes ensuring fuel cells are compatible with heavy-duty trucks and developing appropriate vehicle control technologies. An exciting milestone is set for the end of the current fiscal year, with plans to start testing for the demonstration of prototype trucks on public roads.

The future of heavy duty

Moving forward, Isuzu and Honda have set their sights on accelerating the creation of heavy-duty trucks powered by fuel cells that are environmentally friendly, quiet, and exhibit minimal vibration. Their endeavours will significantly contribute to the broader adoption of clean energy within the logistics industry and help accelerate the shift towards hydrogen energy usage. By doing so, both companies hope to realize their shared vision of a carbon-neutral society.
